Conference SeasonWicked Intentions got a wonderful review from Romantic Times Book Reviews:
4 1/2 stars. Top Pick!
“Hoyt uses her gift for reimagining classic fairy tale themes to create a magnificently rendered story that not only enchants but enthralls. With its mesmerizing plot and unforgettable characters, WICKED INTENTIONS will make readers eager for the next Maiden Lane novel.”
This weekend I’m in Denver for the very first RomCon. If you live in the area and haven’t had a chance to register for the conference, they will be letting people register at the door. If you are attending, please do stop by to say hi!

Happy Dance ReviewsI received two lovely reviews in the last two days. The first is from Publishers Weekly:
Starred Review!
“Bestseller Hoyt (To Desire a Devil) brings steamy sensuality to the slums of early 18th-century London in this engaging series launch. Demure widow Temperance Dews desperately needs funding for her orphanage. Lazarus Huntington, the famously debauched Lord Caire, needs to find out who murdered one of his mistresses. Lazarus offers Temperance an interesting bargain: if she will be his guide in the grimy neighborhood of St. Giles, he will pay the rent she owes and introduce her to more respectable nobility who might serve as patrons. Dire circumstances force the pair into intimate situations as they discover each other’s deepest secrets, and Temperance reveals the passion hidden beneath her puritanical dress. Readers will enjoy the unusual pairing of an aristocratic man and a poor but educated widow, enhanced by earthy, richly detailed characterizations and deft historical touches.”
The second from Romantic Times Book Reviews:
4 1/2 Stars, TOP PICK!

Summer Heat
I spent last weekend putting together four raised vegetable beds made from cedar wood, although I’ve only filled one so far with soil. We planted tomatoes–yellow pear and brandywine–and carrots and multi-colored swiss chard. And then it rained the rest of the weekend and early this week and the entire backyard flooded! I’m so glad I decided on raised beds.
There’s only a little over a month left until the release of Wicked Intentions, the first book in my Maiden Lane series. I’ve posted the video for Wicked Intentions, along with a new research article, St. Giles and the Gin Craze on the Extras page. I’m giving away my very last arc of Wicked Intentions in my website contest along with a gift card for Barnes and Noble bookstores. Finally, for a limited time only I’ll be giving away a free first chapter excerpt booklet for Wicked Intentions–simply go to my contact page and order one.
Enjoy!

Ahhhh!Woot! I’m happy to report that I turned in the first draft of Notorious Pleasures last week. I’ll have a week or two to get caught up in my garden (where have all those weeds come from?) before I get revision notes from my editor and I’ll go back to writing.
Meanwhile, I have a few website updates: There’s a new Turkish page for my Turkish readers. Non-Turkish readers can check out the lovely cover of The Raven Prince Turkish edition! Speaking of which, I’ve updated the French page with all the covers to date–beautiful! The book of the month is Jennifer Haymore’s A Hint of Wicked.
Finally, Brenda Novak’s annual online auction to benefit diabetes research is going on now until the end of May. I have three items up for sale: an advance readers copy of Wicked Intentions; a basket of goodies, including all my books, assorted teas, and British biscuits; and for writers, I’m hosting a brunch for three at RWA nationals in Orlando–I’m thinking mimosas will have to be on the menu!

Website Updates and More
It’s May already and my peonies are in bud. I do hope I can get to weeding before the violets take over the garden this year. What are we without hope?
I heard just today that two of my books finaled in The Readers Crown Contest: To Desire a Devil and my Julia Harper book, For the Love of Pete.
A few website updates:
- I have a new Book of the Month pick up on the Extras page.
- Wicked Intentions bookmarks are in! As always, they’re free so be sure and order some for yourself and for friends.
- If you’re a public librarian in the USA, be sure to check out the list of books in translation I can send to your library. (Scroll down for instructions.)
Enjoy!

RITAs!
Every year I wait anxiously by the phone for RITA news…but this year I got not just one, but two calls. I’m pleased to announce that both To Beguile a Beast and my contemporary romance, For the Love of Pete (written as Julia Harper) have finaled in the Romance Writers of America‘s RITA contest!

Signs of Spring
Just this week the temperatures in my part of the Midwest suddenly soared into the sixties and even hit seventy at one point. My snowdrops were already showing, waiting patiently for the snow to melt, but the lavender species crocus (Crocus tommasinianus) popped up overnight it seemed. I’ve got a shade garden by the side of the house where I planted several hundred a couple of years ago and now it looks like a lavender carpet. The “Tommies” must be happy because I’ve noticed single volunteers peeking out of the grass here and there. Now if only the squirrels don’t eat the blooms!
In other news, my publisher, Grand Central Publishing, will be re-releasing the entire Prince trilogy this summer to coincide with the release of Wicked Intentions. They’ve also giving The Raven Prince, The Leopard Prince, and The Serpent Prince brand new covers which I’ve posted on their respective pages. Mouse over the new covers to see the original covers.

Adventures with Google TranslateI was most excited this week to hear that all my books have sold to a Turkish publisher and that my French language publisher has bought my books through To Desire a Devil! For those counting, this makes ten languages that my books are translated into.
For some reason I find foreign sales especially exciting. First, I usually receive copies of the foreign editions and I get to marvel at the artwork on the cover and thumb through it looking for words (if any) that I can recognize. Secondly–and perhaps more importantly–I receive foreign reader mail! Here I must confess that I was one of those nerdy school children who loved writing to pen pals–especially pen pals who lived in exotic (to me) locals. I can’t tell you how excited I get to open an email and find out it came from…Trinidad! Or Thailand! Or Switzerland!
Most foreign readers have an astonishing command of the English language and will write me in English. Some write me in their own language. This is where the internet is truly wonderful. Where fifteen years ago I might have had to hunt down a person who knew, for instance, Italian, now I can simply copy and paste an email into one of the free online translators and voila! all is made clear.
And then I began getting emails in Turkish.
I think some cultures are more interested in writing to authors than others. I’ve received email from most European countries, only a few from South America and none–none!–from Japan, despite having two books published there. (Why, Japan, why?) But the Turkish have surpassed all previous countries in writing reader mail to me, personally. And I love it! Except…there are these little squiggles (not a technical term) on many of the Turkish letters, and the squiggled letters are entirely replaced by boxes or question marks in my email. Which means that quite a lot of the reader’s letter is lost when I plug it into an online translator.
Still, an author must persevere. I reply to all my reader mail, no matter how unintelligible it might be to me. The only problem? I’m writing back in English and I have a sneaking suspicion that the translation errors work both ways.
And finally in other news, To Desire a Devil has finaled in the 2nd annual Australian Romance Readers Awards in the Favourite Historical Romance category. Woot!

Lovely Updates and the Cover for WICKED INTENTIONS
Max, our biggest Untrained Dog, met me at the door this afternoon, proudly wearing the remains of yet another broken tie-out lead on his collar. Sigh. We do keep getting him the strongest tie-outs we can find and yet he manages to break the one he has every couple of months. I bought him a new one today, “guaranteed” to hold a up to a 125 pound dog (Max is around 80 pounds.) Poor Rue! When I hook the tie out to her it’s like Marley’s ghost in A CHRISTMAS CAROL: drag…THUMP…drag…THUMP…
The monthly updates for my website are up early! Pride of place goes to the new Wicked Intentions page. You can mouse over the cover to view the beautiful stepback, read the excerpt, and pre-order on Amazon. I don’t have bookmarks yet for Wicked Intentions, but they should be coming in by the end of March or so.
What else? I have a new Book of the Month up on the Extras page, and a new website contest featuring books by Laura Kinsale and Margaret Mallory. Enter for a chance to win all three!
January 18th, 2010
In the Midst of MeltingOur big snow is melting away bit by bit which makes walking the dogs easier–for me, at least. The dogs don’t care if they have to hop through snow to go on their morning walk. Rue in particular seems to enjoy sticking her entire head in fresh snow to see what’s under there. I took a peek out front, but so far no signs of early snowdrops. In another couple of weeks, perhaps?
I’ve added a new feature to the Extras page–Book of the Month. I’m often asked for my favorite books, what I’m reading now, or for book recommendations. I was also asked to “blurb” several books in 2009 and I thought I’d share some of these and other books I’ve enjoyed recently. January’s Book of the Month is Courtney Milan’s fabulous debut, Proof by Seduction.
I’ve also updated the individual book pages with a “Book Extras” box that lists all the extras for that book on my website. I hope you enjoy!
