Every year I wait anxiously by the phone for RITA news…but this year I got not just one, but two calls. I’m pleased to announce that both To Beguile a Beast and my contemporary romance, For the Love of Pete (written as Julia Harper) have finaled in the Romance Writers of America‘s RITA contest!

The Dog Days of Summer
Wednesday, July 29th, 2009
I’m back home after two weeks in beautiful D.C., first at the RWA national conference and then spending some time in our nation’s capital. I had a wonderful time at the National Art Gallery, dragging my Offspring to see Rembrandts and Vermeers and lecturing them about Boobies Through History. (They were suitably embarrassed.)
The Untrained Dogs had a vacation of their own (although they may not have seen it that way) at their doggie kennel. I think they’re glad to be home, though, and back to their ultra-soft dog beds.
Chapter 7 of The Ice Princess is up, but be warned: this chapter is for adult eyes only! Please do not read this chapter if you are under eighteen years of age.
I’ve posted the third scene excerpt of Chapter 1 from To Desire a Devil. This scene was not included in the excerpt at the back of To Beguile a Beast. I hope you enjoy it!
And I’m giving away my very last arc (advance reader copy) of To Desire a Devil in my website contest. Enter now for a chance to be the first of your friends to read To Desire a Devil!
Lots and Lots of Books
Tuesday, June 30th, 2009So the Midwest just went through a nasty heat wave and in the midst of it I drove up to Romeoville outside of Chicago to go sign books at a really, really, really big warehouse. I signed for three hours in the morning and two and a half in the afternoon and by the time it was done I’d gone through twelve thin-line sharpies (assorted colors!), a box of 2,000 bookmarks (to put inside the books), and signed slightly under 3,000 books. After that I went back to my hotel room and collapsed. The books I signed (they were pulled ahead of time so I didn’t pick the titles) were The Serpent Prince, To Beguile a Beast, and To Seduce a Sinner. If you live in the USA, you should start seeing these signed copies in big box stores such as Target, Meijer, Wal-Mart, and K-Mart (to name only a few.)
Meanwhile, the link I posted a couple of weeks ago to a free online copy of The Leopard Prince isn’t active yet. I’ll let you know here when it is.
Finally, the RWA Readers for Life Literacy Autographing is coming up in Washington, D.C. There is no admittance charge and over 500 romance authors will be attending to sign their books. Here are the details:
RWA Readers for Life Literacy Autographing
Wednesday, June 15th
5:30-7:30 pm
Marriott Wardman Park Hotel, Exhibit Hall
I hope everyone in the D.C. area can make it!
THE ICE PRINCESS Chapter 5
Thursday, May 14th, 2009My garden is simply delightful right now. True, it’s still full of weeds (mostly wild violets and Star of Bethlehem) but the
mosquitoes haven’t yet hit and the evenings are just right–not too hot, not too cold. My shade garden (under a big old maple tree) has white short-spurred columbine and Spanish bluebells blooming amongst the unfurling hostas. I did see the wicked bunny by my tiny veggie garden, but hadn’t the heart to scare her away. Mr. Hoyt (who grew up on a farm) said it’ll be my own fault if we have no tomatoes this summer!
Website updates for May are done! Here’s what you might want to check out:
- Chapter 5 of The Ice Princess,
- the first scene excerpt of To Desire a Devil,
- the cover of The Serpent Prince French translation, Le Dernier Duel (even if you don’t speak French, the foreign language covers are fun to see!)
- If you’ve ever wondered “who is that model on the cover?” of one of my books, wonder no longer! Check out the FAQs page to find out the identities of all four of the male models on the Legend of the Four Soldiers series.
- and finally, I’m very pleased to announce that To Taste Temptation, To Seduce a Sinner, and To Beguile a Beast will all be released in large print hardcover! The first two titles already have covers to check out–very sexy!
Enjoy!

I’m very, very happy to announce that To Beguile a Beast is on The New York Times bestseller list! Thank you so much to everyone who bought a copy of the book. It’s because of you that To Beguile a Beast is now a NYT bestseller!
And if you’re reading this on the 7th, there’s still time to win a copy of To Beguile a Beast at RR@H Novel Thoughts and Book Talk! Good luck!
Fairy Tales and Auctions
Friday, May 1st, 2009Happy May Day! I was once fortunate enough to enjoy May Day in Oxford, England (I believe I grumbled when my mother pulled me out of bed early to see the Morris dancers–teenagers are never grateful.)
Unfortunately here in central Illinois it’s gray and damp today. Still too wet to weed (well, without making a muddy mess anyway) and rather chilly too. Brrr! Just as well that I need to stay inside and write.
Today I’m blogging at Grand Central Cafe about fairy tales and To Beguile a Beast.
Also today is the start of Brenda Novak’s Online
Auction for Diabetes Research. This is a lovely chance for readers to buy autographed books–and arcs!–from their favorite authors and benefit a good cause too. Here are some of the items I’ve donated:
an autographed arc of To Desire a Devil
an autographed Princes trilogy
the first three books of The Legend of the Four Soldiers series
autographed copies of my Julia Harper books: Hot and For the Love of Pete
Chapter 4 of THE ICE PRINCESS is up!
Wednesday, April 29th, 2009Thank you to everyone writing me with news of where they found To Beguile a Beast! It’s always so wonderful to hear as the books hit the shelves.
In all the excitement about the new web design and new book, I clean forgot to mention that Chapter 4 of The Ice Princess is up! Do go and take a look.
This last weekend I spent a lovely few days in Orlando, Florida at the Romantic Times BOOKreview Convention. I got to meet many readers, lounge by the pool with author friends, and watch the little gecko lizards dart in and out of the underbrush. Everything is so green and lush in Florida! But while there I also picked up the Reviewer’s Choice Award for Best Historical of the Year (the year being last year!) for To Taste Temptation. What a wonderful honor!
Interview at The Book Binge
Tuesday, April 28th, 2009It’s late in the day but not too late to win one of three copies of To Beguile a Beast! Just check out my interview at The Book Binge and make a comment. Three people will be chosen to win a book!
A lovely new look for the website!
Friday, April 24th, 2009The daffodils are up in my garden. Along the side of the house are big yellow Camelots, in front is a clump of white daffodils with bright orange cups—I’ve forgotten the name. And in the hosta garden my favorite daffodils are just coming into bud: snow white Thalias with their petals that curve backwards.
This month I’m excited to debut a new look for my website, courtesy of the creative talents of Vibeke Courtney of DreamForge Media. I hope you’ll take a moment and look around.
To Beguile a Beast is in stores now! The third book my Legend of the Four Soldiers series, To Beguile a Beast features hero Sir Alistair Munroe, scarred from the war in the Americas and living in a dusty old castle. One night he opens the door to find a beauty on his step, claiming to be his new housekeeper. Romantic Times BOOKreviews magazine gave To Beguile a Beast a Top Pick review and said:
“The third legend in the Four Soldiers quartet is a magical love story that reads like a mystical fable and a very real and highly passionate romance. Hoyt has found a unique niche that highlights both her storytelling abilities and her considerable talents for depth of character and emotion.”
I hope you enjoy To Beguile a Beast!
Finally, I’m very happy to announce that To Seduce a Sinner has finaled in Romance Writers of America’s RITA contest! Huzzah!
